The Goal of this FAAST Review is to:

  1. Describe how sheep and goat producers and their veterinarians can practice antimicrobial stewardship without compromising animal health and welfare
  2. Discuss the importance of judicious antimicrobial use and developing and maintaining a veterinarian-client-patient-relationship to maintain animal health and production and overcome the lack of on-label medications for use in sheep and goats
  3. Review how producers can tackle mastitis through managing the environment and reducing the spread of contagious mastitis pathogens, and the use of bacterial culture to ensure proper antimicrobial use and therapy, as well as management tips to reduce the risk of disease development

What You’ll Learn/Topics Covered:

  • How to identify signs of gastrointestinal nematode infection, and management strategies to reduce infection and anthelmintic resistance
  • The importance of maintaining a close relationship with a veterinarian to ensure that antimicrobial medications are being used appropriately because of an inherent lack of labelled products for use in sheep and goats.
  • How to manage milking practices, the environment, and animals in the dry period to reduce mastitis in a flock or herd
